The Ark

A faith-based, multi-purpose healing centre dedicated to restoring wholeness, dignity, and purpose to individuals and communities affected by trauma.

The Ark is a faith-based, multi-purpose healing centre dedicated to restoring wholeness, dignity, and purpose to individuals and communities affected by trauma. Rooted in faith, compassion, and evidence-informed practice, the Foundation sensitizes communities, identifies individuals impacted by trauma, and amplifies their inherent strengths as they journey through healing.

Through holistic psychosocial support, wellness programmes, and leadership development, The Ark accompanies survivors beyond recovery, empowering them to become resilient change agents within their families, institutions, and societies. Our approach integrates spiritual care, mental and emotional wellbeing, and community mobilization to foster sustainable transformation.

By centring healing as the foundation for leadership and social impact, The Ark Foundation contributes to building healthier individuals, stronger communities, and a more compassionate world.

Background History

Rev. Lesley Mbuagbor — Founder
Rev. Lesley Mbuagbor · Founder & Visionary

Growing up, I was exposed to multiple forms of trauma, including sexual abuse, physical abuse, and verbal abuse. These early experiences had profound consequences on my wellbeing. From a very young age, I struggled with depression and anxiety, alongside physical health challenges such as chronic gastritis. At the time, neither I nor those around me understood the relationship between trauma, mental health, and physical illness.

It was not until adulthood that I fully recognised the depth of trauma's impact on my life. In 2012, I entered an extremely difficult season marked by emotional pain, confusion, and despair. During this period, I became suicidal, overwhelmed by unresolved wounds that had followed me for years.

That same year, I experienced a life-changing encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ in my home. Through what I can only describe as a divine and deeply personal process of healing and restoration, He led me through an inner journey; one that functioned much like therapy that transformed my life from the inside out. This encounter marked the beginning of my long-term wellness journey.

A journey from pain to purpose

Since that moment, the Lord has continuously guided and sustained me, walking with me through healing, growth, and restoration. As healing unfolded, I became increasingly aware of the devastating and often hidden effects of trauma, particularly its direct relationship with mental health challenges.

This personal experience awakened a deep sense of responsibility within me. I came to recognize the urgent need to sensitize individuals and communities, especially across Africa, about trauma and mental health, where these realities are still heavily stigmatized, misunderstood, or spiritualizedwithout adequate care. My journey from trauma to healing has shaped my conviction that healing is possible, and that those who heal can become powerful agents of change. Today I am certified Psychotherapist.

My work is driven by the belief that when individuals are supported through healing, they are restored not only to wholeness but also to purpose—capable of impacting families, communities, and nations.
